    A Record-Breaking Year: Miss-Lou Helps 95 Country Raise $56,237 for St. Jude

Natchez, MS – The Miss-Lou community has once again shown its incredible generosity, helping 95 Country (WQNZ Natchez, MS) set a new record during its annual 95 Country Cares for St. Jude Kids Radiothon on March 13-14, 2025. This year’s radiothon raised an outstanding $56,237, surpassing last year’s record of $51,915—the most ever raised in a single year by the station.

Over the past decade, 95 Country and its loyal listeners have contributed a remarkable $410,635 to support the lifesaving work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Every dollar raised helps ensure that families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food—allowing them to focus entirely on their child’s health.

“Year after year, our listeners and community partners prove just how much they care about St. Jude and its mission,” said Margaret Perkins, President/CEO of Listen Up Y’all Media. “Breaking our own record is an incredible achievement, and it’s all thanks to the giving and compassionate people of the Miss-Lou”

95 Country and Listen Up Y’all Media extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who donated and helped spread the word. This record-breaking radiothon is a testament to the power of local radio and the community’s commitment to helping children in need.

  • Beware of Venmo Scam Calls: How to Protect Your Account

Beware of Venmo Scam Calls: How to Protect Your Account

A new scam is making the rounds, targeting Venmo users with fraudulent phone calls from a fake “Venmo Fraud Prevention Line.” The automated call claims that an attempt has been made to change your Venmo password. It then instructs you to press 1 if the attempt was not made by you.

Once you press 1, the scammer will send you a verification code from Venmo and the automated system will then ask you to enter that code over the phone. Do not enter the code.

This is a scam designed to trick you into providing the fraudster with access to your Venmo account. If you enter the code, the scammer can potentially gain control of your account, access your funds, and even lock you out completely.

    What Should You Do?

    • If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately.
    • Do not provide any verification codes over the phone.
    • Change your Venmo password as soon as possible.
    • If you suspect fraudulent activity, contact Venmo support through their official website or app.
    • Consider enabling two-factor authentication for extra security.

Scammers are constantly looking for new ways to trick users into giving up their personal information. Always remain cautious and verify any suspicious requests directly through the official Venmo platform.

Stay safe and share this warning with your friends and family!

  • Update: Concordia Parish School Board Votes Down Proposed Consent Order from US DOJ

Update: Concordia Parish School Board Votes Down Proposed Consent Order from US DOJ

Update: At the community forum held Tuesday night, the Concordia Parish School Board unanimously voted down the proposed changes from the US Dept of Justice which would merge schools and change attendance zones. The board also unanimously voted to enter into a cooperative endeavor with the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office in which the LA AG will represent the Concordia Parish School Board, without charge, in the continuing desegregation suit. Both votes came after numerous comments from the public and a speech from Deputy Solicitor General Morgan Brunard with the LA AG, who urged the board to not accept the DOJ’s proposal.

The Concordia Parish School Board will host a community forum tonight, December 17, 2024, at 6:00 PM at the Vidalia Convention Center to discuss a proposed consent order that could resolve the parish’s decades-long desegregation case.

The desegregation lawsuit, filed in 1965, challenged the operation of racially segregated schools in Concordia Parish. While significant progress has been made, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) believes that further steps are required to achieve full compliance with desegregation mandates. If accepted and implemented, the proposed consent order would allow the School Board to petition the Court for dismissal of the case after three years.

    What’s at Stake

The proposed consent order outlines substantial changes to the Concordia Parish school system, including:

    • Pairing Schools in Vidalia and Ferriday:
      • Kindergarten through 2nd grade at Vidalia Upper Elementary
      • 3rd through 5th grade at Ferriday Upper Elementary
      • 6th through 8th grade at Ferriday Junior High
    • Attendance Zone Modifications for High Schools: Boundaries would be redrawn, affecting Vidalia High, Ferriday High, and Monterey High students.
    • Transfer Policies: Revised guidelines for student transfers, including the continuation of the Majority-to-Minority transfer program, which allows students to transfer to schools where their race is in the minority.
    • Faculty and Staff Assignments: Efforts to achieve a balance in teacher diversity and qualifications across all schools.
    • Facilities and Operations: Addressing school maintenance to ensure equitable conditions across campuses.

    Community Concerns and Input

The proposed changes have sparked significant discussion and concern among community members, particularly regarding attendance zones and school pairings. The School Board emphasizes that this forum is an opportunity for the public to learn more about the proposal and share their opinions directly with Board members.

The forum will include a presentation on the consent order and its potential impacts, followed by an opportunity for public comment.

    Court-Ordered Deadline

The School Board must vote on the proposal before December 31, 2024, as ordered by the Court. Tonight’s forum is an essential step in gathering feedback before that decision is made.

    Attend or Watch Online

The forum will take place at:
    Vidalia Convention Center
    Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at 6:00 PM

For those unable to attend in person, the forum will be live-streamed

  • Natchez Awarded $24.5 Million RAISE Grant for Major Development Project

Natchez Awarded $24.5 Million RAISE Grant for Major Development Project

Natchez, MS – In a significant boost to the city’s infrastructure and development, Natchez has been awarded the 2024 RAISE grant, amounting to $24,570,000. Mayor Dan Gibson made the announcement on Friday afternoon from his office at the historic city hall in downtown Natchez.

The grant, provided by the United States Department of Transportation, will fund the Forks of Freedom Corridor project, a long-planned initiative aimed at revitalizing North Natchez. The project will focus on enhancing the area around the Highway 61 flyover, improving access to downtown Natchez, and beautifying Devereux Drive, thus spurring economic development in a historically significant but declining area.

One of the project’s key components is the development of the Forks of the Road site, which was transferred to the National Park Service in 2021 on Juneteenth. Planned modifications include pedestrian safety improvements, new crosswalks, and the restoration of a historic brick bridge on the old Washington Road pathway. Additionally, the area will see further enhancements around the soon-to-be-named Hiram Revels Plaza and Jefferson Street, extending to the Natchez Bluff and the future site of the U.S. Colored Troops monument.

Mayor Gibson emphasized the comprehensive nature of the improvements, which will also include pedestrian safety upgrades across the majority of downtown intersections, the installation of bicycle lanes, and repaving efforts throughout the downtown area, St. Catherine Street, and Franklin Street.

The announcement came during a meeting with President Tracy Cook at Alcorn State University, where Mayor Gibson received a call from Senator Roger Wicker, delivering the good news. The moment was particularly poignant as the call was received under the portrait of Hiram Revels, the first president of Alcorn State and the first African American to serve in the U.S. Congress.

Mayor Gibson extended his gratitude to several key figures who played a crucial role in securing the grant. Senator Wicker, U.S. Congressman Benny Thompson, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, and former Congressman Michael Guest were all acknowledged for their bipartisan support. Additionally, local entities such as the Natchez National Historic Park, the Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Riverfront, and the Downtown Natchez Alliance were recognized for their contributions.

“This grant is a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of telling our whole story,” said Mayor Gibson. “It’s fitting that this news comes just after Juneteenth, highlighting our commitment to honoring our history while looking forward to a brighter future.”

The RAISE grant, an acronym for Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity, aims to invest in infrastructure projects that promise to achieve national objectives, including safety, economic strength, and environmental protection.
