  • Major Fire Engulfs Delta Fuel Headquarters in Downtown Natchez; Public Urged to Avoid Area

Firefighters from across the region are battling a major commercial structure fire at the Delta Fuel Headquarters in downtown Natchez, prompting officials to urge the public to avoid the area as emergency crews work to contain the blaze.

According to Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Natchez Fire Department and numerous local and regional emergency response agencies at the fire, located at 360 Main Street.

The incident began at approximately 4:58 a.m., when Adams County E911 received a 911 call reporting smoke and the smell of smoke in the downtown area. Firefighters were initially dispatched for a possible electrical fire. When crews arrived, they discovered a significant fire involving the Delta Fuel building that has since intensified.

Officials said the fire remains active, and firefighters are working aggressively to prevent it from spreading to neighboring structures.

Sheriff Patten said all known occupants of the affected buildings have been safely evacuated.

A large number of agencies have responded to the scene, including Entergy, Atmos Energy, Natchez Water Works, the Concordia Fire Department, and multiple volunteer fire departments, alongside local law enforcement officers who are securing the area to ensure emergency crews can operate safely.

Authorities are asking residents and visitors to stay away from downtown Natchez until further notice.

Officials specifically urge motorists to avoid Main Street and surrounding downtown streets and not to drive around barricades. Keeping the area clear will allow firefighters, EMS personnel, utility crews, and law enforcement the space they need to safely battle the fire and protect nearby businesses.

  • Former county administrator Mitzi Conn joins Natchez-Adams County Airport staff

Just days after concluding her tenure as Adams County administrator, Mitzi Conn is beginning a new chapter at the Natchez-Adams County Airport.

According to the Natchez Democrat, Conn will start work Monday in an accounting and administrative role at the airport, where she said she is eager to return to a project she helped shepherd during her time in county government.

“I’m so excited about it. I have my joy back!” Conn told the Natchez Democrat on Friday.

Conn said she has not yet been given an official job title.

“I’m just going to be a general helper, doing whatever I am needed to do,” she told the Natchez Democrat.

A certified public accountant, Conn spent nearly 30 years in financial leadership positions, including serving as chief accounting officer at Callon Petroleum before the company left Natchez. She later worked for Delta Fuel and as a consultant before being hired by the Adams County Board of Supervisors as county administrator. Conn announced her resignation earlier this year, with her final day in the position coming on July 8.

Prior to becoming county administrator, Conn served on the airport’s board of commissioners and played a significant role in efforts to improve the airport’s finances and operations. She also worked closely with airport officials during the construction of the new terminal and preparations for the launch of commercial air service, which began on July 1st.

Airport Director Carl Beasley said he is excited to continue working alongside Conn as the airport expands its operations.

“Mitzi and I have become such best friends through this whole process,” Beasley told the Natchez Democrat. “I’m so excited to have my partner back.”

Beasley said Conn’s financial expertise will be instrumental as the airport manages its growing responsibilities.

“Her accounting knowledge and background are so needed,” Beasley told the Natchez Democrat. “We are essentially running three businesses out here — general aviation, commercial air service and a fueling operation. It’s going to take her accounting background to keep these finances straight and bring that money to Natchez.”

Conn’s hiring comes as the Natchez-Adams County Airport continues to build on the recent launch of commercial passenger service and the opening of its new terminal, marking a period of significant growth for the airport.

Adams County deputies searching for escaped inmate after walkaway from roadside work detail

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is searching for an escaped inmate who walked away from a county inmate trash detail Friday in the Jeanette Road and Springfield area of Adams County.

Authorities identified the inmate as Houston Tyler Dunson, 46, of Natchez.

According to the sheriff’s office, Dunson was assigned to a supervised roadside litter detail when he fled from custody. Multiple deputies and other law enforcement officers are actively searching the area.

Officials said there is currently no information indicating Dunson is armed. However, the public is urged not to approach him under any circumstances.

Residents in the Jeanette Road and Springfield communities are being asked to remain vigilant and take precautions while the search continues. The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who sees Dunson to call 911 immediately and not attempt to confront or apprehend him.

Authorities are also asking residents and business owners to review security camera footage for any suspicious activity, lock their homes, vehicles and outbuildings, and report any suspicious persons or activity to law enforcement.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office said it will provide updates as more information becomes available and thanked the public for its cooperation as deputies work to safely locate and apprehend Dunson.

The Natchez-Adams County Airport has announced the winner of its Fly for Free Sweepstakes, celebrating the launch of new daily United Express service between Natchez and Houston.

Monique Taylor was named the grand prize winner, receiving two round-trip airline tickets to Houston. The prize was presented during a ceremony at the airport, where Taylor was joined by family members and airport officials.

The contest coincided with the launch of United Express service, operated by SkyWest Airlines, which began on July 1. The daily nonstop flights connect travelers from Natchez-Adams County Airport (HEZ) to Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, providing access to United Airlines’ worldwide network while eliminating the need for many local travelers to drive to larger airports.

Airport officials have described the new service as an important milestone for Natchez and the surrounding region, offering residents and visitors greater convenience and improved connectivity through the airport’s recently completed terminal.

  • Natchez Man Charged with Attempted Murder Following Domestic Dispute, Hostage Situation

Natchez Man Charged with Attempted Murder Following Domestic Dispute, Hostage Situation

A Natchez man is facing an attempted murder charge after authorities say he fired multiple rounds at his adult son during a domestic dispute Thursday before barricading himself inside a home with his wife and later surrendering to law enforcement.

According to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a reported shooting at a residence on Canvas Back Court on Thursday, July 9.

Investigators identified the suspect as 64-year-old Ben Thames of Natchez. Authorities allege Thames fired multiple rounds at his adult son during the incident. The victim suffered minor injuries and was able to escape to a nearby residence, where he called 911 for help.

When deputies arrived, investigators said Thames had barricaded himself inside the home with his wife, who was being held against her will. Authorities said Thames was armed with a long gun and other firearms.

Before officers could fully secure the residence, Thames reportedly fled through the back of the home in a Chrysler 300 and drove toward the Kingston area.

An investigator with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office established telephone contact with Thames and persuaded him to return to the residence, where he surrendered without incident. Members of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the Natchez Police Department took Thames into custody. The Mississippi Highway Patrol had also been requested to assist but was no longer needed after Thames surrendered peacefully.

Thames has been charged with one count of Attempt to Commit Murder under Mississippi Code § 97-1-7(2). The Sheriff’s Office said additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.

Authorities said the victim’s injuries are believed to be minor. Investigators are still working to determine whether the injuries resulted from a grazing gunshot wound or from debris caused by a projectile striking a nearby object.

Sheriff Travis Patten praised the response of the officers involved in bringing the situation to a peaceful conclusion.

“This situation had the potential to end in tragedy for everyone involved. I am grateful for the quick actions of our deputies, the assistance provided by the Natchez Police Department, and the calm, professional efforts of our investigator who was able to convince the suspect to surrender peacefully. Incidents involving domestic violence and firearms are among the most dangerous calls law enforcement responds to,” Patten said.

The investigation remains active, and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said additional charges may be filed as investigators continue gathering evidence.

The Sheriff’s Office also reminded the public that domestic disputes can escalate quickly and urged anyone experiencing domestic violence or who believes they are in immediate danger to call 911 immediately.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Local Roundup: Adams County Appoints New COO; Tarpon Bill Vetoed; Horn Island Death Under Investigation

Adams County Administrator Mitzi Kahn attended her final meeting Monday as the Board of Supervisors’ Chief Operating Officer. The board has appointed Tawana Williams to fill the position. Williams, who began work last week, attended the meeting as an observer while beginning orientation for the role. The position drew eight applicants and carried a posted annual salary of $100,000. Before her hiring, Williams served as Workforce Development Director for Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Natchez–Adams County.

Kahn resigned after 15 months in the job. Since 2020, seven people have served in the county administrator position on either an interim or permanent basis following the departure of Joe Murray, who held the role for 10 years.

The Louisiana Wildlife Federation reported concerns about declining Atlantic tarpon populations, following Governor Jeff Landry’s veto of a bill that would have implemented protective measures for the species. Advocacy Director Rick Owens expressed disappointment, noting that while tarpon remain in Louisiana waters, their distribution has changed over the years. In his veto message, Landry stated there is no evidence of significant harvest pressure on the largely catch‑and‑release species. Owens said the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has identified tarpon as vulnerable and that the legislation would have established a foundation for future conservation and management.

The Mississippi State Conference NAACP is calling for an investigation into the death of 18‑year‑old Nolan Wells, who was found dead on Horn Island earlier this week. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reported that Wells was last seen Saturday. According to attorney Benjamin Crump, Wells traveled to the island by boat with friends but did not return with the group. His mother reported him missing that night, and his body was found Monday. Sheriff John Ledbetter said the investigation is ongoing and the cause of death has not been determined.

In St. Landry Parish, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents cited 32‑year‑old Sydney Broussard of Eunice for allegedly selling native turtles online. Authorities say Broussard was offering red‑eared slider turtles for $8 each and an alligator snapping turtle for $30. LDWF officials stated that while recreational limits exist, commercial activity involving these turtles is not permitted. The seized turtles were returned to the water, and Broussard faces a $350 fine for each turtle she attempted to sell.

Colorado State University has lowered its hurricane forecast for 2026. The updated projection calls for nine named storms, including four hurricanes, with one expected to become a major hurricane. The long-term average season includes 14 storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes. Researchers attribute the reduced forecast to expectations of a strong El Niño during the peak of the season.
